smart #5 EV Arrives In Malaysia Costing From RM 199,800

The big news with this big smart is for it to have a 646 PS Brabus variant that goes from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Following its initial local preview at the Malaysia Autoshow this past May, smart has now officially launched its #5 in Malaysia. This blocky and bigger brother to the existing #1 and #3 currently arrives over here in two flavour, with a base Pro spec to follow eventually:

  • Premium: RM 199,800
  • Brabus: RM 249,800

Now for a company that started out making tiny two-seaters, this all-electric is positively gargantuan. The #5 measures in at 4,695 mm long, 1,920 mm wide and 1,705 mm tall, which technically puts it a smidge larger than a Honda CR-V.

In terms of exterior aesthetics, its boxy profile is somewhat reminiscent of a Mercedes-Benz GLB… which should not come as a surprise given that the model was designed by the three-pointed star marque (who incidentally still co-owns this brand with Geely).

Exterior highlights on the #5 includes squarish full-LED head- and taillights bridged by four oblong light clusters for a total of six lighting elements at the front and rear (or seven if you count the third brake light below the boot spoiler). Along its side meanwhile, pop-out door handles and frameless windows transition to thick, vertical D-pillars that house the smart badge.

The Brabus spec is distinguished on the outside by red-accented Brabus body kit pieces, paired with 21-inch Monoblock Z lightweight alloy wheels that replace the Premium’s 20-inch items. This hot variant also gains adaptive headlights, which feature a smart light show function for added nighttime theatrics.

Under the skin, the #5 rides on the same Sustainable Experience Architecture 3 (SEA3) platform as the Zeekr 7X. Powering the Premium variant is a single rear-mounted electric motor developing 363 hp and 373 Nm, good for a 0–100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds and a 200 km/h top speed. The Brabus trim in turn gains a second motor on the front axle for an all-wheel-drive setup producing a combined 646 hp and 710 Nm, enabling the headline 3.8-second century sprint and a slightly increased top speed of 210 km/h.

Both trims feature a 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. Range figures stand at 590 km for the Premium and 540 km for the Brabus. More impressively though is perhaps the fact that the #5 packs an 800-volt electrical architecture that supports up to 400 kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10–80% top-up in just 15 minutes. AC charging is to be supported at up to 22 kW, taking around 4.5 hours for a 10–80% charge.

Moving along within, the #5’s dual-oblong dashboard design houses three large displays: a 10.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, along with a pair 13-inch AMOLED touchscreens for the centre and front passenger. These are then further complemented by a 25.6-inch augmented-reality head-up display, a 256-colour ambient lighting system and a 20-speaker Sennheiser Signature Sound System with a centre channel that rises from the dashboard.

What more too is that fitting for its premium price tag, the #5’s cabin also features oak wood trim and power-reclining rear seats. The Brabus variant adds sporty touches including an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with an illuminated Brabus logo, Dinamica suede upholstery with red contrast stitching, red seatbelts and Brabus sport pedals.

Colour options for the #5 include Meta Black, Cyber Silver Metallic, Pulsar Ruby and matte Saturn Beige. The Brabus can be had in Meta Black, Digital White Metallic and matte Atom Grey (a RM 5,000 option).

And back to the topic of numbers here, it is worth highlighting that these prices are only applicable to the first 300 buyers. All purchases nevertheless include a four-year unlimited-mileage warranty, an eight-year/200,000 km battery warranty (150,000 km for high-voltage components) and a two-year spare parts warranty.

Also available is a launch package that bundles a wallbox charger worth RM 3,200, a V2L adaptor worth RM 800, a three-year data package (3 GB per month for a total of 108 GB) and an accessories package worth RM 2,000.
