Why Exactly Are So Many People Buying Peroduas These Days?
Perodua managed to achieve its highest-ever annual sales figure in 2024, with 358,102 cars sold.
Perodua has recently and rather proudly announced that over the past 12 months of 2024, it has shifted a whopping 358,102 cars! This figure is to be up by a healthy 8.4% from the year before, and is incidentally an all-time record for the Malaysian automaker, who currently commands an overall new car market share locally of 44%.
Here’s a question though: Why exactly are Perodua’s sales rising?
Well, Automacha here has come up with two reasons to this. One is to be rather complimentary to Perodua, while the other is quite damning to us Malaysians…
1. Perodua Just Makes Good Cars
While many may scoff at the statement above, it is nevertheless just a fact that Perodua indeed makes good cars, in the sense of being more-than-decent transportation tools anyway.
For one, pretty much all new Peroduas comes with all the kit that one would really need in a modern car, not to mention coming with plenty of safety features for the price too. It should also go without saying that Peroduas cost pennies to keep running, thanks to their fuel-efficient engines, in addition to having the reputation of being cheap to service and dead nuts reliable as well.
What more is that Perodua currently has model lineup that pretty much satisfies every major segment in the market. It has two small yet spacious subcompacts (Axia and Bezza), two mid-sized models (Myvi and Ativa) and two practical people movers (Alza and Aruz).
And in getting back to the topic of price meanwhile, those who may be shopping around for used Peroduas may have come to realise that resale values for their cars are among the best in the business. In fact, it is not an exaggeration that one could buy a brand new Myvi, and pretty much lose no money on it on the resale, even after running it ragged for a few years.
Rock solid residuals and really low running costs pretty much makes for Perodua to therefore be the fiscally prudent automotive choice in Malaysia, which unfortunately leads to the more damning point as to why they is currently more popular than ever.
2. Malaysians Are Getting Poorer
Now let’s all be frank here, people really only look at Perodua when they can’t really afford anything else on the market (and the fact that their top-selling model is also incidentally to be the cheapest car in Malaysia really emphasises this point).
And while the facts and figures might show our local economy is currently on the boil, ask any Malaysian how they are doing financially right now though, and the reply will likely be a lamentation of how everything is going up in price… but their salaries.
So really during the times when people are tightening their belts, the cheapest and most reliable transportation tool around will likely be the go to choice for the many Malaysians who need something to get around. It is therefore no wonder then that Perodua is having a bumper year for sales at this present moment…
