Volkswagen will introduce the new ID. Tiguan in October, adding an all-electric version of its established SUV nameplate as the brand continues expanding its ID range.
The ID. Tiguan is scheduled to enter markets from early 2027 and will be positioned as the successor to the ID.4 and ID.5. It will be sold alongside the existing Tiguan, which will continue to be available with combustion-engine and hybrid powertrains.
The upcoming model is the third major Volkswagen nameplate to receive an ID version, following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. Volkswagen said the use of the Tiguan name is intended to maintain continuity with the existing model as the company moves the nameplate into its electric vehicle range.
The new electric SUV has been developed with a completely new exterior design. Volkswagen said the vehicle will have a larger visual presence compared with the outgoing ID.4 and ID.5, placing it closer to the next vehicle segment in terms of its appearance.
The production version of the ID. Tiguan is currently undergoing testing while covered in camouflage. Its official world premiere is scheduled for early October, ahead of its market launch in 2027.
The existing Tiguan nameplate has been used on more than 8.3 million vehicles produced worldwide. Volkswagen currently describes it as its best-selling model globally, while the Tiguan and its sister model, the Tayron, together recorded more than one million deliveries during the past year
Both the Tiguan and Tayron are offered with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, giving buyers several options depending on market availability.
The ID. Tiguan will instead use a fully electric powertrain and will join Volkswagen’s existing battery-electric lineup. It will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 within the brand’s model range, with the two models having recorded more than 950,000 deliveries since their introduction in 2021.
Volkswagen said the ID. Tiguan will combine the SUV format associated with the existing Tiguan with an electric vehicle platform and a new design. The company has also indicated that the model will feature a more spacious interior, updated controls and new technology, although full technical specifications have not yet been released.
The introduction of the ID. Tiguan means Volkswagen will continue offering the Tiguan name in both electric and combustion/hybrid forms. This approach allows the established model name to remain in the lineup while the company expands its battery-electric range.
More details, including the vehicle’s specifications, battery capacity, range, performance and pricing, are expected to be announced when the ID. Tiguan makes its world premiere in October.
