Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 Launched Locally For RM 267,990

This new half-centenary special edition Golf adds an Oettinger bodykit for a slightly different look.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has recently launched the Golf GTI Edition 50 over here, in celebration of this iconic German hatchback celebrating its half-centenary anniversary worldwide in 2024. This locally-assembled special edition adds a few minor aesthetic enhancements on the outside and within, with it being available locally (in apparently limited numbers) for RM 267,990.

Now starting from the add-ons that have been made on this special edition on top of any stock Golf GTI, the most immediately obvious from the outside will likely be its new Oettinger body kit. This has brought with it a black front spoiler, black roof spoiler and diffuser that Volkswagen touts to ‘enhance its style and performance and adds a bold touch to the exterior styling of the Edition 50’.

This special edition also incidentally adds a couple of other black bits on its exterior as well, like a pair of black side mirror caps and a set of ‘Pretoria’ light alloys in high-gloss black finish. The Edition 50 interestingly further nets GTI Dynamic wheel hub caps too, in addition to some VW Design aluminium valve caps on those aforementioned 18-inch rollers.

Also along the side of this Golf here are to be a set of sporty side decals down its lower half, which continues on the honeycomb pattern found on this Mk8 GTI’s lower front air intake and foglight assembly. Volkswagen has since thrown in as well something it has dubbed ‘Edition 50 VW Tint’, along with a set of ’50’ emblems on both B-pillars to serve as a consistent reminder upon getting inside it what occasion this special Golf was meant to commemorate.

Moving on within the GTI Edition 50, this special edition differentiates itself from the stock hot Golf by including a “50” emblem at the centre spoke of its multi-function sport steering wheel. A set of branded aluminium side scuff plates and branded front carpet mats has also been included, but that’s about it…

Much like the standard Mk8 Golf GTI available over here, this Edition 50 comes packing a 2.0-litre EA888 Gen 3 TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder that is good for 245 PS and 370 Nm of torque. This boosted mill is then paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch DSG transmission that sends power to the front wheels, which is then helped along by an ESC-based XDS electronic differential lock system and Vehicle Dynamics Manager with Dynamic Chassis Control.

Equipment available with this Edition 50 meanwhile similarly mirrors the recently facelifted Mk8 GTI locally, with its highlights including a 10-speaker, 480 W Harman Kardon sound system, a 10-inch Discover Media infotainment system with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and IQ.Drive features such as Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Side Assist, Front Assist, Lane Assist and Head-up Display.

Available exclusively in two colour options (Oryx White and Moonstone Grey), the RM 267,990 figure for the Edition 50 represents a RM 15,000 hike over the stock GTI. This recommended retail price is nevertheless inclusive of Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP), which supports owners with 5 years maintenance, 5 years unlimited mileage warranty, and 5 years roadside assistance.

The GTI Edition 50 will be on display during the upcoming Golf Fan Fest, which will be held on the 24th of August 2024 at the North Paddock of Sepang International Circuit. It will also be available for viewing at Volkswagen dealerships from the 17th of August 2024.

Denyu Bostandzhiev, Managing Director of VPCM expressed his excitement at introducing the GTI Edition 50 to the Malaysian market. “This special edition GTI represents a milestone for us, as we celebrate the Golf’s 50th anniversary. The GTI is already such an exceptional model, and the Edition 50’s upgrades certainly adds a unique touch that makes it a collectible item. We believe that the Edition 50 will appeal to those in the GTI’s already passionate fanbase looking for that something extra special.”
