Toyota’s Upcoming 2.0L Turbo-Four Apparently Pumps Out 600 HP
What more is that this monstrous figure from Toyota’s new 2.0-litre is possible without electrification assistance.
For those who still have some petrol flowing in their veins, Toyota may soon have something that you might be rather interested in. And this something is apparently a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, that supposedly is rumoured to be churning out a whopping to 600 PS!
Now for those who are quick at math, it might come to your attention that this 2.0-litre is churning out 300 PS per litre of displacement. What more too is that while it is helped along by a turbocharger, this massive amount of power is generated entirely by the internal combustion process itself, without any external electrification assistance.
Before anyone gets too excited here though, it is worth noting that this monstrous 600 PS figure is for this engine in its top-spec racing form. A high-performance production version for the road however is nevertheless still expected to deliver a healthy 400 PS and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque, with there rumoured to also be a less powerful variant is also reportedly in the works that puts out 300 PS and 400 Nm.
This upcoming 2.0-litre turbo was previously previewed by Toyota back in May as part of its next-generation of internal combustion engines, with it to be arriving alongside a smaller capacity 1.5-litre. This new 2.0-litre is touted to surpass the existing boosted 2.4-litre in its physical dimensions, in addition to offering better performance and fuel-efficiency.
Toyota has also previously claimed that this new engine will be capable of meeting the more stringent emission regulations across various global markets, as well as for it to be compatible with both electrification and alternative-fuel technology too. It currently remains to be seen though as to which models in the pipeline will be featuring this rather potent power plant, but the rumour mill is currently strongly pointing towards a potential modern revival of the MR2 roadster being among the candidates.
Japanese automotive publication Best Car has previously cited internal Toyota sources that this 2.0-litre could be paired up with the automaker’s GR-Four 4WD system to create a flagship GRMN version of the revived MR2. It has also added that the same combination could be used for the return of the Celica, which the marque has long since toyed with bringing back to the market as well.
