Kia EV9 Crowned World Car (& World EV) Of The Year 2024

The Kia EV9 beats out the BYD Seal and Volvo EX30 for this particular automotive award. 

The 2024 World Car Awards has recently been revealed at the New York Auto Show, and the top honours has gone to Kia’s EV9. Beating out the BYD seal and Volvo EX30 for the crown, this particular all-electric large SUV has also scooped the World Electric Vehicle of The Year 2024 at the same time too. 

Selected by a jury of 100 distinguished automotive journalists representing 29 countries, the World Car Awards had recognised the Kia EV9’s innovative design, spacious seven-seat interior, and competitive price point. This large South Korean SUV is incidentally to be the 3rd consecutive(!) time an E-GMP-based Hyundai Motor Group product has clinched the crown in this particular contest, with the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 being the prior overall winners in 2022 and 2023 respectively. 

And while on the topic of the IONIQs, the hot N version of the IONIQ 5 was recognised as the World Performance Car for 2024, beating out the BMW XM and M2. The Bavarian marque did nevertheless come away with the World Luxury Car honour this year, with its 5-Series/i5 beating out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and EQE SUV finalists.

World Car of the Year: Kia EV9

World Luxury Car: BMW 5-Series/i5

World Performance Car: Hyundai IONIQ 5 N

World Electric Vehicle: Kia EV9

World Urban Car: Volvo EX30

World Car Design of the Year: Toyota Prius

World Car Person of the Year: Adrian Newey

Getting back to discussing Kia’s triumph at the 2024 event now, the South Korean automaker is proud to tout that this recent double-victory for the EV9 further builds upon its three prior wins at the World Car Awards – the Telluride as World Car of the Year and the Soul EV as World Urban Car in 2020, along with the Kia EV6 GT taking World Performance Car of the Year in 2023.

These two wins in the World Car Awards incidentally also add to an already impressive haul of accolades for the Kia EV9. Since its introduction as Kia’s first dedicated three-row E-SUV, it has collected a number of prizes, including winning the ‘Family Cars’ category of the Golden Steering Wheel Awards, the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, and ‘Best Premium SUV’ at the 2023 Newsweek Autos Awards.
