Honda Malaysia Recalls 87,490 Cars Over Faulty Fuel Pumps

This recall pretty much affects nearly all Honda models officially sold in Malaysia over the last decade.

Honda Malaysia has recently issued a significant product recall affecting 87,490 vehicles across multiple model lines, citing fuel pump defects that could potentially cause engine stalling or starting issues. The recall encompasses the automaker’s most popular models manufactured over the past decade, making it one of the largest automotive recalls in Malaysia’s recent history.

Two Distinct Fuel Pump Problems Identified

The recall addresses two separate fuel pump issues affecting different vehicle groups. The majority of affected vehicles (84,073 units) for this recall suffer from a fuel pump impeller problem, while an additional 3,417 newer models face high-pressure fuel pump complications.

Fuel Pump Impeller Defect

The primary issue involves the fuel pump’s impeller, which may swell after prolonged exposure to fuel. This swelling can prevent vehicles from starting or cause dangerous engine stalling while driving. The affected models pretty much span Honda Malaysia’s entire lineup from 2013 to 2020:

Model Year Range
Jazz 2015–2020
Jazz Hybrid 2018
City 2014–2019
City Hybrid 2018–2019
Civic 2017–2018
Accord 2013–2017
BR-V 2017–2018
HR-V 2015–2018
CR-V 2018–2020
Odyssey 2017–2019

High-Pressure Fuel Pump Issues

A smaller number of Honda models meanwhile face a different fuel pump issue, namely with the high-pressure fuel pump. The high-pressure fuel pump in recent Civic (2023-2024) and CR-V (2024) models may crack under prolonged use and stress, potentially causing fuel leaks or noticeable fuel odours during operation.

Free Replacement and Customer Support

Honda Malaysia emphasises that all fuel pump replacements will be provided free of charge, with the company bearing all associated costs. The replacement process will be conducted in stages as parts become available through authorised Honda dealers.

Affected customers will receive official notification letters detailing the recall process. Vehicle owners can verify their car’s recall status through multiple channels:

Honda Malaysia has extended the recall coverage to include vehicles where warranty periods have expired, demonstrating the company’s commitment to customer safety. The automaker also is keen to state that there have been no reported crashes or injuries related to these fuel pump issues in Malaysia to date.

Current Honda production and retail models are unaffected by this recall, according to the company’s statement. Honda Malaysia apologised for the inconvenience while reaffirming their dedication to transparency and stringent safety controls.
