Facelifted Proton X50 Lands Locally Costing From RM 89,800

The first 10,000 customers stand to enjoy an additional RM4,000 rebate on the facelifted Proton X50’s list price.

Not long after its order books opened, Proton has since officially launched its updated X50. And just getting right to the main headline, here are the prices for this newly-facelifted small SUV:

  • 1.5TD Executive: RM 89,800
  • 1.5TD Premium: RM 101,800
  • 1.5TD Flagship: RM 113,300

Or more accurately, for the first 10,000 bookings made between now and October 31st, prices for the facelifted X50 actually range between RM 85,800 and RM 109,300. This is thanks to a special RM 4,000 early bird rebate, bundled together with a handful of other launch perks:

  • A 2 GB/month data upgrade for five years
  • Up to RM 2,000 in trade-in overtrade support
  • Special financing: 2.35% p.a. over five years or 2.38% p.a. over seven years
  • A refreshed Proton Insurance Programme for the first year, including special perils cover, up to RM500 in child seat support, and personal accident coverage of up to RM 15,000 per passenger

Now, as for what’s new with the car itself, the most significant update to this revised Proton compact crossover lies under the bonnet. Gone is the old three-cylinder engine, with the X50 now adopting a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder across the board.

This new engine produces 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque, with power still sent to the front wheels via the same 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Proton also claims improved fuel efficiency (nearly 5% better than before) along with reduced maintenance costs, thanks to the use of a timing chain in place of the previous belt.

Visually, the facelift brings a refreshed exterior, headlined by a larger grille flanked by slimmer LED reflector headlamps and a reshaped bonnet. Round the back, a full-width LED light bar makes its debut, with the Flagship variant adding a bit more flair with a striking roof spoiler.

The Executive variant of the facelifted X50 comes with redesigned 17-inch two-tone turbine-style alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the Premium and Flagship trims ride on new 18-inch wheels with a distinctive knurled-effect finish on the spokes.

Inside, the X50’s cabin has been comprehensively reworked, and it is actually to be an in-house design not shared with other Geely models. Taking centre stage within is a large 14.6-inch floating infotainment touchscreen that now finally supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ahead of the driver meanwhile sits a new 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster, complemented by a frameless rear-view mirror and a column-mounted gear selector integrated into the right-hand stalk.

Standard kit for the base Executive spec includes remote engine start, automatic headlights and wipers, single-zone automatic climate control, fabric upholstery and a reverse camera. The Premium trim in turn is easily identified from the outside by the standard addition of red brake calipers, while it adds within it faux leather seats, a 72-colour ambient lighting system, a tyre pressure monitoring system, powered tailgate, and a 360-degree camera system with a new transparency view function.

Finally, the Flagship trim builds further on this with a bold roof spoiler to complement its standard two-tone exterior. Inside, it adds a panoramic sunroof, semi-transparent sun visors, a Qi wireless charger, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

Safety-wise, all variants now come with six airbags as standard. Also new across the range are rear radar sensors that enable features like blind spot monitoring, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert, and door opening warning. A new front-facing camera system mounted at the top of the windscreen enables improved Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane centring assist.

It nevertheless remains a little surprising that Proton continues to gatekeep core ADAS features — such as autonomous emergency braking — from the base Executive trim, reserving them instead for mid-spec variants and above. An updated Intelligent Park Assist system meanwhile remains exclusive to the Flagship.

Five exterior colours are to be on offer with the newly-facelifted X50: Snow White, Passion Red, Jet Grey, Armour Silver, and a new Teal Bayou Green (borrowed from the S70 and replacing the outgoing Ocean Blue). The Flagship is the only variant to net a sportier black-and-red two-tone theme within, while the lower trims make do with an all-black cabin.
