Range Rover Electric Marks The Brand’s First Fully Electric SUV

Range Rover has introduced its first fully electric model, bringing electric propulsion to its flagship luxury SUV. Built at JLR’s Solihull plant in the UK, where Range Rover has been produced since 1970, the Range Rover Electric combines the brand’s existing design and off-road focus with an electric powertrain

The SUV uses twin permanent-magnet electric motors producing up to 550PS and 850Nm, with a usable 118.5kWh battery and 800V electrical architecture. Range Rover quotes up to 372 miles (599km) of WLTP range, while its stated real-world range is up to 535km

The electric powertrain also brings quicker responses and reduced cabin noise. The Range Rover Electric can accelerate from 0–60mph in 4.3 seconds, while 50–75mph overtaking takes as little as 2.7 seconds

For off-road driving, the vehicle uses Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) and Integrated Traction Management (ITM) to manage torque and wheel slip. ITM can adjust motor speed within 50 milliseconds, while the system can control slip considerably faster than an equivalent combustion-powered vehicle

A new Single Pedal mode is also available, allowing the SUV to handle steep inclines, including pull-away gradients of up to 33 degrees and rolling climbs of up to 45 degrees

Charging is supported at up to 350kW DC, with a 10–80 per cent charge taking around 22 minutes under ideal conditions. Range Rover says the vehicle can also add up to 220km of WLTP range in 10 minutes when charging at its maximum rate

The Range Rover Electric has undergone more than 1.5 million kilometres of testing and over 250,000 hours of virtual and physical development. Testing has included temperatures as low as -40°C in Sweden and hot conditions in Dubai

Its ThermAssist heat management system is designed to improve battery and charging performance in extreme temperatures, with Range Rover claiming up to 25 miles of additional range and a 40 per cent reduction in heating energy use

JLR has also developed a Battery Digital Twin with more than 900 diagnostic data points, allowing the company to monitor battery condition through software. The electric powertrain is covered by an eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty

Production takes place at Solihull following a major factory redevelopment. The first phase covered 40,000 square metres and added 13 battery and electric drive unit production lines, with JLR also training thousands of employees in electrification

Battery packs and electric drive units are supported by JLR’s facility in Wolverhampton, which now produces both electric powertrain components and internal combustion engines
