Tesla Robotaxi On Verge of 24/7 Capability
24/7 operational capability may be achieved within the next month
On September 6, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla’s head of AI, stated that Tesla’s Robotaxi autonomous ride-hailing service is close to achieving 24/7 operation. Responding to a user’s question on X (formerly Twitter), he said this capability would be rolled out “in about a month” once the “next technology in the v15 plan” is fully integrated.
Elluswamy did not disclose specific technical details or clarify whether the feature would initially launch on the Cybercab, the existing Model Y fleet, or both simultaneously.
Currently, Tesla’s Robotaxi service operates seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in six U.S. cities: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. As of July 2026, the fleet has accumulated over 380,000 miles across two states without any serious accidents caused by the vehicles themselves.
While Tesla is transitioning from a daytime-restricted pilot to full-time availability, competitors like Waymo have already been operating driverless fleets 24/7 for several years.
Moving to a 24/7 model significantly boosts vehicle utilization, which is essential for the economic viability of the network. To support overnight demand, Tesla has already begun utilizing public Superchargers at night and is actively building dedicated Robotaxi charging sites.
This model may help Tesla increase profitability as Robotaxi services are generally still losing money overall. Companies invest heavily in scaling operations and technology, though early financial projections and small commercial rollouts show potential for future profit.
Tesla has also confirmed that consumers will be able to but Tesla Cybercabs for 30,000 USD (122,000 MYR) that will be able to earn passively cash for the its owner. Though it is still unclear how this will work and questions about liability still have not been answered. Will this be an opportunity for consumers to make money or is it just Tesla’s attempt at further monetizing this technology.
Either way, it seems the future of self-driven taxi’s is still uncertain and is only going to get more sophisticated and common as time goes on.
