Mazda MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition Launched In Malaysia

Just 4 units of this 35th Anniversary Edition MX-5 will apparently be officially made available here in Malaysia.

The Mazda MX-5 turns 35 this year, and to celebrate, Mazda has decided to mark this momentous occasion with the launch of a special edition model. And happily enough for Malaysian MX-5 fans, official distributor Bermaz Motor has also brought in this commemorative 35th Anniversary Edition to our shores!

The 35th Anniversary Edition that has been officially launched here comes exclusively in the retractable fastback (RF) body style, is to be paired only with the 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission (Boo…). The sticker price for this particular special edition comes in at (an admittedly steep) RM 315,000.

Now, MX-5 anoraks will be able to identify this 35th Anniversary Edition by its exclusive exterior colour option: Artisan Red Premium Metallic. This advanced three-layer finish is touted to be unique to this celebratory variant and is incidentally only the fourth colour to be applied using Mazda’s proprietary Takuminuri painting technology.

Aside from the rich red paintwork, the celebratory variant further nets a serialised 35th Anniversary Edition badge on the rear fender. Body-coloured outer rearview mirrors are also present on this special edition MX-5, along with 17-inch Bright Metallic alloy wheels.

Moving on to the cabin, the 35th Anniversary Edition pairs its burgundy exterior with a Sports Tan interior palette. The dashboard trim, carpeting, and floor mats all come finished in this cream hue, with the 35th Anniversary Edition logo embroidered on the mats and embossed on the headrests. Artisan Red Premium-coloured trim accents in turn are to be found around the air-conditioning vents and door panels.

Initially launched all the way back in 1989, over 1.2 million units of the MX-5 have since been sold across four generations. Locally meanwhile, Bermaz Motor officially began selling the third-generation NC, before introducing the current fourth-generation ND in August 2015.

And speaking of the ND, Bermaz Motor has now also officially opened the order books for the newly-updated ND3 iteration of the 2025 Mazda MX-5. Much like the 35th Anniversary Edition, this refreshed roadster is only offered in RF body style, and still features the Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder that produces 184 PS at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque. But at least this time around, buyers have a choice of either a 6-speed auto or the proper 6-speed manual, with the latter starting from RM 293,000.

This latest mild update brings with it a restyled exterior light signature, now fully LED all around, as well as a slightly tauter rear bumper. Inside, the 2025 MX-5 receives a newly designed meter cluster with a darker dial face and updated pointer shape, alongside a new 8.8-inch infotainment system featuring voice recognition and a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) has also now been part of the MX-5’s i-Activsense suite, with the manual transmission variant further gaining DSC-TRACK (Driving Stability Control Track Mode) and a new Asymmetric LSD (Limited Slip Differential). This newly introduced differential, paired with an updated Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system, should make this already playful roadster even more of a hoot to drive.
