BMW 3 Series Sales Have Surpassed 20 Million Units

The BMW 3 Series incidentally hits this production milestone in its 50th year since its initial inception.

While the big news with the 3 Series this year is undoubtedly its 50th anniversary, there is coincidentally another momentous milestone to celebrate with this small premium sedan. Such is as the Bavarian automaker has recently announced that over 20 million units of the 3 Series have been delivered to date, firmly cementing it as one of the world’s best-selling luxury car lineages ever.

Now this impressive production figure takes into account all derivatives of the 3 Series, including the wagon and the now-defunct Gran Turismo hatchback body styles. BMW also included all coupe and convertible variants that once wore a “3” on their boot badges in the total count — prior to these two-door models being rebranded as the 4 Series in the early 2010s.

Incidentally around that same time too, BMW had introduced a slightly stretched version of the 3 Series bearing the “Li” designation, primarily to satisfy the Chinese market (with it to also be sold officially over here too). This elongated trim would later serve as the basis for a fully electric 3 Series that is currently exclusively available in China, badged as the i3.

To date, the BMW 3 Series has gone through seven generations, beginning with the first-generation E21 that debuted back in 1975. Fast forward to 2025 meanwhile, and the current seventh-generation 3 Series is already in its twilight years, with the next-generation model expected to arrive next year.

Production of this upcoming eighth-generation G50 3 Series is slated to begin in November 2026. This CLAR-based, ICE-equipped model is reportedly set to launch alongside a fully electric i3, which will ride on the automaker’s all-new Neue Klasse EV platform.

BMW Malaysia currently offers four variants of the latest (and recently mildly updated) G20-generation 3 Series. These are:

  • BMW 320i M Sport – RM 299,800
  • BMW 330i M Sport – RM 335,200
  • BMW 330Li M Sport – RM 341,200
  • BMW M340i xDrive M Sport Pro – RM 412,200

All prices listed above are inclusive of a five-year warranty and service package.
