What We Know About The Proton e.MAS 5 So Far

The Proton e.MAS 5 is set to become Malaysia’s cheapest brand new EV when it arrives in the next couple of weeks.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you might have seen online that Proton has recently announced that the order books for its upcoming e.MAS 5 is now open. And the big news is that this all-electric hatchback set to land locally with a rather attractive price tag, which apparently is set to start from just RM 60,000.

A figure that has certainly caught the attention of many, so here’s everything we know so far about this upcoming fully electric Proton hatchback.

What Is It?

Very basically, the e.MAS 5 is an all-electric hatchback. It incidentally succeeds the recently defunct Iriz as Proton’s hatchback offering.

More specifically meanwhile, the e.MAS 5 is to be a localised version of the Geely Xingyuan (which just so happens to be one of China’s best-selling EVs in the first half of 2025). The model will be locally assembled at Proton’s new Tanjung Malim plant, alongside the similarly Geely-derived e.MAS 7 SUV.

How Big Is It?

In terms of size, the e.MAS 5 sits in roughly the same class as the Perodua Myvi. Here’s how the two stack up on paper:

Model Length (mm) Width (mm) Height (mm) Wheelbase (mm)
Proton e.MAS 5 4,135 1,805 1,580 2,650
Perodua Myvi 3,895 1,735 1,515 2,500

What Variants Will Be Available At Launch?

The e.MAS 5 will be available in two variants, following the same structure as the e.MAS 7 SUV:

  • Prime
  • Premium

How Much Will It Cost?

The estimated pricing released alongside the booking announcement currently sees the Prime variant listed at RM 60,000, while the Premium is set to go for RM 80,000. And as with most pre-launch figures, there’s every chance that the final prices could be even lower once the car officially debuts.

At that price point, the e.MAS 5 will officially hold the title of Malaysia’s cheapest new EV. And yes, that figure includes the cost of the battery.

For a bit of perspective, the similarly sized but fully imported BYD Dolphin starts at around RM 100,000. The range-topping Perodua Myvi AV meanwhile tops out at RM 59,900.

What Are Its Tech Specs?

Both Prime and Premium variants of the e.MAS 5 will be rear-wheel drive, powered by a single rear-mounted electric motor (making it the first-ever rear-wheel drive Proton). The Premium variant gets the larger battery and more powerful motor, as detailed below:

Specification Prime Premium
Power 79 PS (58 kW) 116 PS (85 kW)
Torque 130 Nm 150 Nm
0–50 km/h 4.4 seconds 3.9 seconds
Top Speed 125 km/h 135 km/h
Battery Capacity 30.12 kWh LFP 40.16 kWh LFP
Range (WLTP) 225 km 325 km
DC Charging 71 kW (30–80% in 21 mins) 71 kW (30–80% in 21 mins)
AC Charging 6.6 kW 6.6 kW

Due to its rear drive layout, the e.MAS 5 rides on a multi-link rear suspension setup, instead of the usual torsion beam found in most cars within its segment. Proton has also apparently spent some time retuning the setup from the usually soft Geely base, so it should have at least a bit of the handling magic that comes to expect from a hatchback from the roaring lion marque

Other pertinent figures that Proton have since touted was for the e.MAS 5 to feature a 4.95-metre turning circle, as well as a 36.9-metre braking distance from 100 km/h to 0 km/h.

How Practical Is It?

While the e.MAS 5 is a five-seat small hatchback, its all electric underpinnings does make it surprisingly practical. There lies a 70-litre frunk up front, while the 375-litre boot round its rump expands to 1,320 litres with the rear seats folded.

Proton also claims up to 32 individual storage compartments within the cabin, including a 20-litre cubby under the centre console and a 28-litre drawer under the rear bench, similar to what’s found in the e.MAS 7.

The full equipment list for the e.MAS 5 hasn’t been fully revealed just yet, but Proton has shared enough to give a rough idea of what to expect:
