Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe May Be Malaysia’s 3rd(?) Most Expensive EV

This upcoming Mercedes-AMG 4-door performance EV is estimated to start from RM1.29 million.

Likely in conjunction with the upcoming F1 race in Sepang, Mercedes-Benz has since decided this is a good time to showcase a few of its spicier models locally. And thus, along with the Malaysian debut of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Pro came the preview for the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which incidentally could be Malaysia’s third(?) most expensive EV to date.

Coming just four months after its global reveal, the car that was previewed right beneath the Petronas Twin Towers (because Petronas, Mercedes F1, etc.) is actually only the mid-spicy GT 55 variant. Though it has since been confirmed that what will actually arrive in Malaysia next year is the full-fat GT 63, with pricing estimated to start from RM1.29 million!

Now unlike its predecessor, it should be noted that this new-age model is expectedly all-electric, underpinned by Mercedes-AMG’s dedicated AMG.EA architecture. Both the GT 55 and GT 63 are powered by three axial-flux motors, with one up front and two driving the rear wheels.

Combined output for the GT 55 is currently rated at a rather substantial 816 PS and 1,800 Nm when the car is placed in AMG Launch Control mode, while continuous power is rated at 510 PS. The range-topping GT 63, however, takes things even further with 1,169 PS and 2,000 Nm on tap, while continuous power stands at 721 PS.

Providing the necessary juice for all those motors meanwhile is an AMG High Performance Electric Battery (AMG HP.EB), with the unit offering a total energy capacity of 106 kWh. This gives the GT 4-Door lineup a WLTP-rated range of between 596 and 696 km, depending on the spiciness of the variant.

As for topping up said massive battery, there is also 800-volt charging hardware on board. DC fast charging at up to 350 kW can thus take the battery from 10 to 80% in just 16 minutes, while 11 kW AC charging takes around 11 hours for a full charge.

Moving topside, this production four-door fastback has certainly borrowed plenty of styling cues from the Concept AMG GT XX. Angular headlights with star-shaped daytime running lights flank a jutting grille, complete with a black surround and illuminated outline, while its rump gets six circular taillights housed within a large slatted black panel.

Finally moving inside, screens are taken care of by a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen angled towards the driver. The front passenger gets their own 14-inch touchscreen too, while a Sky Control panoramic glass roof features individually switchable segments and AMG-specific light staging.

Emphasising the AMG-ness even further in the cockpit is the AMG Race Engineer Control Unit mounted on the centre console. This consists of three haptic rotary controls that give the driver access to various driving dynamics features without having to go hunting through menus on the touchscreen.

Drivers can also adjust the sound character inside the cabin, with Powerful, Balanced and Minimal settings available alongside a scale ranging from Classic to Futuristic. And for those who really cannot let go of the idea of a V8 in an electric AMG, the AMG Force S+ setting even samples engine noises from the GT R.

Getting back to that seven-figure price tag though, those who want to know who the king of the hill should remember that Rolls-Royce does make an EV, with the pre-tax pricing of its Spectre having already crept past the RM2 million mark. Pipping the Mercedes in terms of pricing is also a Porsche, with the Taycan Turbo S with Weissach Package listed on Porsche Malaysia’s website at RM1.55 million.

Still, a podium spot on Malaysia’s EV rich list is not all too shabby for this Merc. Though given how “unique” it looks, some might say that money cannot buy taste after all.
