Jaecoo J7 PHEV SUV Teased For Imminent Debut In Malaysia

This PHEV variant of Jaecoo’s J7 also recently managed over 1,300 km on a full tank of fuel and battery.

Following on from the strong sales success of its J7 locally, Jaecoo Malaysia has recently teased that it is soon to introduce a PHEV variant of this popular C-segment SUV over here. This more eco-concious version will look largely similar to its purely petrol-powered counterpart, but underneath its boxy body lies an electrified powertrain boasts some seriously impressive specs.

Confirmed to arrive locally in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations, the plug-in hybrid powertrain of this upcoming Jaecoo J7 pairs a 1.5 turbocharged petrol four pot to an electric drive motor on its front axle. This electrified setup is quoted in its home market to output a combined 347 PS and 525 Nm of torque, which is to be a fair bit more than the already more-than-reasonable 197 PS and 290 Nm figure currently output by its current purely petrol-powered counterpart.

Though for those who think that horsepower and torque figure is impressive, they really ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Such is as with a massive 18.3 kWh battery pack, Jaecoo is currently quoting that this J7 PHEV can travel up to 106 km (NEDC) on a full charge of its 18.3 kWh battery pack.

What more too is that even if the battery is completely drained, its PHEV system can still somehow see for its petrol-powered component eke out the lowest fuel consumption in its class, at 5.99 litres per 100 km. And perhaps most impressively of all is that with a 60-litre fuel tank on board, Jaecoo is currently touting that this plug-in hybrid J7 can travel over 1,200 km when both its battery and fuel tank are topped up to the brim.

This much was proved recently when a multinational contingent of J7 PHEVs — comprising of media members from Italy, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Malaysia (basically the countries that will be getting this electrified Jaecoo  first) — travelled over 1,300 km on a single tank of fuel and a full battery without stopping to recharge. This journey started in Guangzhou on the 16th of October, with the convoy navigating through various driving environments including traffic congestion during morning rush hour, national roads, and intercity expressways before reaching Wuhu 13 hours later.

Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President, Emily Lek points out with this upcoming PHEV SUV: “During the ultra-long range driving marathon, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV surpassed its specifications to achieve a range of 125.2 km while in pure-electric mode, which is 19.2 km more than the expected range. This is a testament to Jaecoo’s Super Hybrid System (SHS) Technology which empowers the Jaecoo J7 PHEV to maintain an efficient and energy-saving driving state. This raises the bar for energy efficient and economical mobility, and we are proud to introduce the Jaecoo J7 PHEV for the Malaysian market to enjoy.”

Oh and one more thing here that was not used during the cross-province economy convoy but worth a mention, the J7 PHEV also interestingly nets DC charging ability of up to 40 kW. V2L capability with an external output is available too on this electrified SUV, which its makers tout will be useful in powering various electrical and electronic devices when its owners are out adventuring with this Jaecoo.

Registrations of interest for the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is currently set to begin next week, with its official local launch currently penned in for the end of this year. The first public outing of this electrified SUV will be taking place from Wednesday, 23 October to Sunday, 27 October at Sunway Pyramid (LG2 Orange Wing – next to the Orange concourse).

Much like the its current petrol-powered sibling, it is currently expected for this upcoming PHEV variant to be locally-assembled at Jaecoo’s inaugural Malaysian production plant in Shah Alam. Customer deliveries of this electrified SUV is currently slated by its maker to begin by February 2025.

“Fans will have an option of colours, rim styles and interior upgrades available to choose from which add a distinct individuality to the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, while staying close to the brand’s essence, ‘From Classic, Beyond Classic’”, teased Lek. This statement further alludes to the imminent arrival of various factory accessories for this Chinese SUV, which was first teased over here all the way back when the petrol-powered model first made its local debut in July.
