Honda Prelude Hybrid Coupe Lands Locally Costing RM 278,000

This Prelude blends Civic Type R chassis hardware with Honda’s latest e:HEV hybrid powertrain.
Initially teased a whole two years ago at KLIMS 2024, the production version of the Honda Prelude has finally made its official Malaysian debut at KLIMS 2026. Arriving in a single fully-loaded variant priced at RM278,000, the sporty hybrid coupe does incidentally come in significantly lower than many had anticipated, especially considering that it is positioned above the FL5 Civic Type R in Honda’s domestic Japanese market.

Under the bonnet of the Prelude sits an Atkinson-cycle 2.0-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine producing 141 hp and 182 Nm, similar to the unit found in the Civic e:HEV (with which it shares its basic underpinnings). As with Honda’s series-parallel hybrid system, the engine primarily functions as a generator, supplying electricity to a 1.05 kWh battery that powers a front-mounted traction motor producing 184 hp and 315 Nm.
At higher speeds though, the petrol engine can be clutched directly to the front wheels for direct drive. Combined system output of this electrified powertrain stands at 203 hp, enabling the Prelude to complete the century sprint in a “comfortable” 7.9 seconds before reaching a top speed of 180 km/h.

Just to inject a bit of spice into the Prelude, Honda has equipped it with its new S+ Shift system, which has been engineered to replicate the sound, response and feel of a conventional eight-speed automatic transmission despite the car utilising an e-CVT setup. Through a combination of software and hardware controls, the system simulates gear changes to deliver a more engaging driving experience behind the wheel.
Backing up the relatively “comfort-oriented” electrified powertrain too is a chassis package borrowed heavily from the Civic Type R, nicking the hot hatch’s dual-axis MacPherson strut front suspension and adaptive dampers. Braking performance is in turn handled by the same four-piston Brembo front brake setup, albeit finished in blue and tucked behind 19-inch Berlina Black alloy wheels.

Now as for styling, this is arguably where the Prelude shines brightest. The sleek coupe adopts a low-slung stance with a sharp nose accentuated by slim LED headlights. A flowing roofline transitions neatly into muscular rear haunches, while a full-width rear light bar stretches across the tailgate to complete the modern grand tourer aesthetic.

Moving along inside, the dashboard layout lifted straight from the Civic is nevertheless dressed up with a few Prelude-specific touches. These include an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with a centre marker, as well as semi-bucket dual-tone leather seats featuring embroidered Prelude logos on the headrests.
Equipment highlights include a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Other niceties include an eight-speaker Bose sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and wireless smartphone charging.

Safety-wise, the Prelude comes equipped with seven airbags, comprising front, side, side curtain and knee airbags, alongside four front and four rear parking sensors and a reverse camera. The full Honda Sensing suite is also fitted as standard, bringing features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross Traffic Monitor.

The Honda Prelude is available in a choice of three exterior colours: Winter Frost Pearl, Rallye Red and Crystal Black Pearl. Included in the RM 278,000 asking price is a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, together with five complimentary labour services redeemable within five years or 100,000 km. The hybrid battery and associated components meanwhile receive a separate 10-year unlimited mileage warranty.
