Here’s All You Need To Know (So Far) About The Proton e.MAS 7

The main thing worth knowing about this Proton e.MAS 7 is for it now be open for bookings, with an estimated price of RM 120,000!

So you might have heard that Proton has recently pulled the (most of the) covers off its e.MAS 7 during its booking commencement announcement. But after what felt like months of it dropping scattered bits of information every other day, some might now be feeling a tad lost as to what exactly is this first ever EV from the Malaysian marque actually offers.

Handily for those then, Automacha is here with a curated summary of what is currently known about this Malaysian twin to Geely’s Galaxy E5. Just to help those be more informed on whether they should be putting their name down on this mid-sized e-SUV.

Variants On Offer

Two variants are to be offered with this upcoming e.MAS 7: Prime & Premium. Both variants feature the same electric drivetrain, but the battery capacities differ between the two. There is expectedly also more kit available with the higher-end Premium trim, as to be detailed further below.

Estimated Price

Proton has teased that the e.MAS 7 will land locally with ‘an inviting estimated price of RM 120,000’. It unfortunately remains to be seen if this is the ceiling price for this e-SUV, or the starting price.

Just for a bit more context here, the only available spec of BYD Atto 3 in Malaysia currently (2024 Extended Range) currently retails for RM 149,800. The e.MAS 7’s ICE equivalent in the form of the recently facelifted Proton X70 meanwhile costs from between RM 98,800 and RM 126,800.

Early Bird Booking Offers

Bookings for this upcoming e.MAS 7 opens today (at time of writing), with Proton also throwing in a few worthwhile goodies to the first few who put their names down for this e-SUV. The ‘Pioneer Privilege Deal’ on offer to those who book one of these e-SUVs from today till its launch includes a RM 500 rebate and a ‘Pioneer Gift Pack’ worth RM 1,000.

The booking fee for the Proton e.MAS 7 is RM 500.

Dimensions

The upcoming Proton e.MAS 7 comes in at 4,615 mm in length, 1,901 mm in width and 1,670 in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Here is a how the Proton e.MAS 7 stacks up size-wise against some of the other cars prospective buyers may compare it against:

Proton e.MAS 7 Honda CR-V BYD Atto 3 Proton X70
Length 4,615 mm 4,691 mm 4,455 mm 4,526 mm
Width 1,901 mm 1,866 mm 1,875 mm 1,831 mm
Height 1,670 mm 1,681 mm 1,615 mm 1,694 mm
Wheelbase 2,750 mm 2,701 mm 2,720 mm 2,670 mm

The Prime trim of the e.MAS 7 with the smaller 49.52 kWh battery is claimed to weigh in at 1,662 kg, while the larger 60.22 kWh battery pack in the Premium variant pushes the kerb weight up to 1,765 kg.

Boot space for this C-segment SUV is 461 litres with the seats up, which expands to 1,877 litres after the rear row is folded down. Proton is also claiming that the e.MAS 7 has a class-leading 33 storage compartments, which includes a 10.8-litre centre console slide out drawer towards the rear row and a 14-litre rectangular drawer under the rear seats. There is also a 55-litre storage compartment under its two-level boot floor, which makes up for the absence of a frunk.

One more interesting dimension-related factoid worth a mention is for the e.MAS 7 to tout a maximum wading depth of 400 mm, which is to be higher than what Geely claims for the Galaxy E5 twin to this Proton e-SUV.

Powertrain Specifications

Both variants of the e.MAS 7 feature an identical electric motor setup, with the only major difference between the two trims on the powertrain front coming from the size of its drive battery.

Irrespective of variant, the e.MAS 7 will feature a front-mounted ’12-in-1 Electric Drive System’ that outputs 160 kW (218 PS) and 320 Nm of torque. Proton is incidentally claiming this e-SUV is its fastest accelerating model to date, with a 0-100 km/h time of 6.9 seconds. Its top speed meanwhile is currently rated at 175 km/h.

In discussing what feeds the drive motor now, both variants of the e.MAS 7 are to be powered by a battery pack comprising of Aegis Short Blade cells of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The Prime’s pack has a usable capacity of 49.52 kWh, while the Premium nets a larger unit with a 60.22 kWh usable capacity. This in turn supposedly translates to a WLTP-rated driving range on a single full charge of 345 km for the Prime, with the Premium’s larger battery extending that figure to 410 km.

The Prime is capable of accepting only a maximum DC charging input power of 80 kW, while the Premium has tops out slightly higher at 100 kW. Thanks to the smaller battery in the Prime though, Proton is able to claim that both variants can charge from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes when connected to their respective peak DC fast charging inputs.

As for AC charging on the other hand, both e.MAS 7 variants are capable of accepting up to 11 kW. The smaller battery pack on the Prime sees for it to take 4.9 hours to charge from 30% to 80% on the maximum AC input, while the Premium’s larger-capacity pack will instead take 6.1 hours to attain the equivalent increase in its battery percentage.

During a prior product presentation, Proton has claimed that the Aegis Short Blade batteries have an energy density of 192 Wh/kg, are safer than standard lithium ion designs thanks to wet process dual separators and have improved durability of 3,500 cycles (1,000,000 km of driving). The battery packs are further integrated into the chassis with Cell-To-Body construction for better torsional stiffness, which enables better packaging and a lower centre of gravity.

Chassis Specifications

Underpinning the e.MAS 7 is Proton’s new Global Modular Architecture (GMA), which in essence is Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) with some modifications.

The e.MAS 7 nets MacPherson struts up front, while its rear features a multi-link suspension setup. Proton has previously claimed that it has revised the suspension tuning for this e-SUV over its Geely twin, with this newly-stiffened localised configuration said to deliver better ride comfort and body control.

Electrically-assisted power steering is expectedly to be found on the Proton e.MAS 7, with the turning radius of this e-SUV currently being rated at a surprisingly narrow 5.4 metres.

Rolling stock on the Prime variant of e.MAS 7 are to be a set of 18-inch alloys shod in 225/55 profile rubber from Giti. The higher-end Premium trim instead nets wheels that measure 19-inches in diameter, with it to then come wrapped in a set of slightly wider 235/50 profile Goodyear tyres.

Proton Super App

Proton has teased that the e.MAS 7 will be available with what it dubs the e.MAS app, which it has described as a ‘dynamic platform designed to enhance the user experience from booking through ownership’. The app is said to offer various services that range from making vehicle bookings, scheduling routine maintenance appointments and accessing Malaysia’s public EV charging network.

And if this does sound very familiar to the admittedly rather nice to use hello smart app, it is because this app should all but likely be the same app with a different skin. After all, the hello smart app was incidentally developed locally by PRO-NET.

Automacha First Impressions

A quick first impression of the Proton e.MAS 7 could be found linked here, while there is also a separate story linked here that details the many quirks and feature discovered within this e-SUV.

Available Colours

5 exterior colours are to be available with the Proton e.MAS 7: Platinum Silver, Turquoise Green, Slate Gray, Quartz Rose and Lithium White. There is however to only be one interior hue on offer: Indigo Blue.

Future Plans

Proton has yet to announce an official launch date yet for the e.MAS 7, but all signs do suggest that it will be making its local debut before the end of this year. First customer deliveries of this e-SUV meanwhile should begin in earnest from the start of next year.

There are to be 36 Proton e.MAS dealerships throughout the country at last count, with the Malaysian marque still out looking for more distribution partners to join its electrified journey ahead.

The e.MAS 7 will incidentally be the first of 5 models Proton aims to debut with its new GMA architecture. These upcoming models might not just be fully-electric too, as the platform can be adapted for PHEV and ICE powertrain options. There is however no official word yet on when exactly the next model will be due in the pipeline, nor even what is will be actually.
