The Geely-rebadged Proton will soon be rebadged as a Geely again for sale in Indonesia.
Here is a little badge-ception for you: the Geely Coolray that was rebadged into the Proton X50 will soon be rebadged once again as a Geely. Such is this rather convoluted rebadging exercise, with the familiar B-segment SUV set to go on sale in Indonesia under the Chinese automaker’s own brand.
Shipped across the archipelago straight from Tanjung Malim, what probably makes this badge-ception even stranger is how the Indonesian-market Coolray is assembled from a rather curious hodgepodge of parts from the various iterations of the X50, as well as a few bits from the original China-market Binyue.
Starting from the outside, the Indonesian-market Coolray retains the taller headlights, vertically-oriented taillights and tailgate-mounted number plate recess of the original Proton X50. These are then complemented by a few bits from the Binyue’s first facelift from 2021, including the X-shaped front bumper and more aggressive rear diffuser.
Then from the facelifted X50 come the larger Batmobile-style rear spoiler, together with its 18-inch alloy wheels, finished in gloss black alongside the grille, window trim and tailgate garnish. Topping things off is a dark bluish-green exterior colour option that looks suspiciously similar to Proton’s own Teal Bayou Green.
Moving inside meanwhile, the hodgepodge continues with the Indonesian-market Coolray gaining the almost entirely new cabin from the latest Proton X50. That brings with it the 9.0-inch digital instrument display and 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, joined by a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, Qi wireless charger, 360º camera with transparent chassis view, autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.
Finally, as for what powers it, the Indonesian Coolray receives the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as launched in the facelifted X50, producing 181 PS and 290 Nm of torque. Paired to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission driving the front wheels, Geely claims a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7.6 seconds, a top speed of 200 km/h and combined fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 km.
Having only sold electrified models in Indonesia thus far, the Coolray will notably be the first internal combustion-powered model in Geely’s local lineup there. Prices have yet to be announced, though those should be made known when this rebadged Proton makes its public debut at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) later this month.
Ending on a little factoid too, this is not even the first time Geely has gone full circle with its rebadging exercise. Not too long ago, Proton X50s exported from Malaysia to South Africa were sold wearing their original Geely badges once again.
