CATL Tectrans II Promises 1,000km Range And 25-Minute Megawatt Charging

CATL has unveiled Tectrans II, a new commercial vehicle battery platform developed to support the growing electrification of trucks and other commercial vehicles worldwide.

The new platform was revealed on September 14 at IAA Transportation 2026, where CATL presented its latest approach to commercial vehicle electrification. The company describes commercial vehicle electrification as the “third wave” of the global energy transition, with the sector expected to become an increasingly important part of the move towards lower-emission transportation.

Unlike passenger cars, commercial vehicles typically operate for longer hours, cover significantly greater distances and have more demanding operating schedules. As a result, battery range, charging speed and long-term durability can have a direct impact on operating costs and vehicle productivity.

CATL says Tectrans II has been developed around these real-world operating requirements. The platform uses a modular architecture, allowing it to support different commercial vehicle applications and customer. requirements across global markets

One of its headline capabilities is a driving range of up to 1,000km, potentially allowing electric commercial vehicles to complete longer routes with fewer charging stops. For operators, reducing charging downtime can be particularly important as vehicles often need to remain in service for extended periods.

The platform also introduces support for megawatt charging, with CATL stating that compatible vehicles can recharge their batteries to 80% in around 25 minutes. The high-power charging capability is intended to reduce the amount of time electric commercial vehicles spend off the road.

Durability is another major focus of Tectrans II. For the heavy-duty truck version, CATL says the battery is designed to provide a service life of up to 12 years or 1.5 million kilometres.

Together, the long driving range, rapid charging capability and extended battery life are intended to improve the overall business case for electric commercial vehicles. CATL says these characteristics can contribute to faster payback, higher operating returns and stronger residual values.

The company also plans to support its commercial vehicle customers beyond the battery hardware itself. CATL says it will continue providing high-quality and reliable battery products, localised services and long-term support for commercial vehicle operators around the world.

With Tectrans II, CATL is positioning its battery technology around the specific demands of commercial transportation rather than simply adapting passenger-car solutions for larger vehicles.

As more fleets begin moving towards electrification, battery platforms capable of combining long range, rapid charging and high mileage durability could become increasingly important to keeping commercial vehicles productive while reducing their dependence on conventional powertrains.
