Gentari and BYD Malaysia Explore Flash Charging Deployment

Gentari and BYD Malaysia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore deploying BYD Flash Charging technology in Malaysia. The collaboration will also assess battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support faster and more convenient EV charging.

Signed in Shenzhen, China, on October 21, 2026, the agreement brings together Gentari, a clean energy company wholly owned by PETRONAS, and BYD Malaysia.

BYD Flash Charging can deliver around 400 km of driving range in as little as five minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions.

Identifying Charging Locations Across Malaysia

Under the MoU, both companies will identify suitable locations for the charging infrastructure. This includes key intercity routes connecting major population centres.

They will also assess power infrastructure, battery storage requirements, technical and commercial considerations, project development opportunities and potential operating models. These assessments will help determine how the technology could be deployed at scale.

Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, it also provides access to around 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India.

Malaysia’s EV Market Continues to Grow

Malaysia recorded 53,537 new EV registrations during the first nine months of 2026. This represents a 98.8% increase compared with the same period in 2025.

The growth comes as Malaysia works towards the government’s target of 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030.

Beyond EV charging, Gentari and BYD will explore opportunities in renewable energy generation and energy storage. The discussions will draw on Gentari’s clean energy expertise and BYD’s energy storage technology.

The MoU was signed by Gentari’s Sushil Purohit and BYD’s Jacob Ma. Representatives from both organisations and PETRONAS attended the signing, including BYD Group Chairman Wang Chuanfu.

The agreement establishes a framework for both companies to assess potential projects. It does not confirm specific charging locations or a deployment timeline.
