Anthony Loke’s Tenure as Malaysia’s Transport Minister: Key Developments
Anthony Loke Siew Fook has served as Malaysia’s Transport Minister during two periods, from May 2018 to February 2020 and again from December 2022. His time at the Ministry of Transport has included changes to road transport services, public transport operations, commuter assistance and major infrastructure projects.
Digitalising Road Transport
One of the most visible changes was the digitalisation of Road Transport Department (JPJ) services. The MyJPJ app introduced digital road tax and driving licence services, reducing reliance on physical documents.
JPJ also allows competent driving licences to be renewed for periods of up to 10 years. Loke’s first term also saw the digitalisation of vehicle registration number bidding through the JPJ eBid system.
Public Transport and Rail Reliability
Improving rail reliability became a major focus during Loke’s second tenure. Prasarana Malaysia reported that annual rail service disruptions fell from 252 cases in 2022 to 31 cases in 2025. Mean Kilometres Between Failures also improved from one disruption every 60,000 km in 2022 to one every 790,000 km in 2025.
The government also continued expanding digital payment options and working on maintenance and upgrades across the Klang Valley rail network.
Support for Commuters
The RM50 My50 unlimited travel pass remained a key public transport initiative, providing 30 days of travel across selected Klang Valley services. In 2026, digital features were added to help users track their usage and savings through Touch ’n Go eWallet.
The FLYsiswa programme also continued to support students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, with the government maintaining student flight assistance under Budget 2026.
Major Transport Projects
Loke’s tenure also covered progress on several major infrastructure projects. The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) reached 91.7% construction progress by January 2026, with train testing and commissioning preparations underway and operations targeted for January 2027.
The ministry also continued work on the Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link, Penang’s public transport development and Malaysia’s transition towards electric vehicles, including the restructuring of EV road-tax rates.
Overall, Loke’s tenure involved a combination of transport digitalisation, rail reliability measures, commuter support and continued development of major national transport projects.
