Proton’s X50 R3 20th Anniversary Edition Costs RM 125,300

This X50 commemorating 20 years of Proton’s R3 motorsports division is limited to 200 units.

Following its preview at the MARii Autoshow 2023 in May, Proton has recently announced the price of its R3 20th Anniversary Edition accessories package for its X50. And that price is RM 12,000, which given that this package is only available to buyers of the range-topping 1.5 TGDi Flagship variant in Jet Grey, then bumps the total on-the-road price for this special edition compact crossover to RM 125,300.

Now credit where credit is due to Proton though, buyers of this accessories package do actually get quite a lot for their money. Starting from the bottom and working upwards, this R3 20th Anniversary Edition X50 nets a custom bodykit that includes some vividly yellow front, rear and side skirts.

Similarly yellow brake calipers are also to be found hiding behind a set of black-painted R3 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels, which are apparently 2 kg lighter than the stock items. This special edition also nets an R3 front grille logo along with a yellow painted lower grille garnish up front, while a limited edition tailgate nameplate and a larger roof spoiler adorn its rear.

The Jet Grey exterior hue of this compact crossover that Proton mandates for all X50 20th R3 Anniversary Editions to be ordered in is then funnily enough covered up by a satin black vinyl wrap, complete R3 grey and yellow bonnet stripe. On the inside meanwhile, the enhancements include front headrests that feature R3 embroidery, a custom interior dash nameplate, R3 carpet mats and Proton window tint.

As this is only an accessories package, there is unfortunately to be no performance enhancements bar the slightly lighter wheels that is made to this X50 which celebrates 20 years of Proton’s sporty division. This compact crossover still has its usual 1.5-litre turbocharged three-pot that outputs 177 PS and 255 Nm of torque, with drive sent to its front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

And if anyone is perhaps still interested in procuring one of these black-and-yellow special edition compact crossovers too, there may be some bad news on that front. That is as Proton has stated that this R3 20th Anniversary Edition accessories package is only limited to 200 sets, and apparently 180 of them were already accounted for when this X50 was previewed at the X50 Carnival at the Proton Centre of Excellence on Saturday (28th October).

“As the company celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023, it is a timely opportunity for PROTON to acknowledge some of our other milestones. R3 has been synonymous with Proton’s success in the motorsports arena for as well as developing models with outstanding performance for our customers who are driving enthusiasts.”

“Today, the R3 brand remains popular amongst Proton fans who have shown their support by purchasing R3 branded merchandise and specially formulated lubricants. We are grateful for their enthusiasm and want to reward them with this accessories package that was developed specially for Proton’s most popular SUV model,” said Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer, Proton Edar.
