The 8,600+ Malaysian-registered EVs are broken down by make and model further down below.
While Malaysia might only have recently begun its EV craze and is likely still have a long way to go before reaching Norway levels of adoption, there are actually a surprising amount of these all-electric cars roaming our roads already. Such is as data extracted from JPJ (and compiled by a very hard-working member of the Malaysian Electric Vehicle Owners Club) can attest, there are apparently to be over 8,600 of these zero-emissions machines currently registered over here.
What more too is that this already rather reasonable quantity of EVs is to only be current up to the 31st of August 2023, which does mean that the imminent batch deliveries of Tesla’s Model 3 and smart #1s are yet be included within this overall count. So it therefore would seem likely then that this figure will only continue growing from here on out, and most probably exponentially too if the current consumer trends are to be believed.
Now it is worth noting though that the aforementioned 8,600+ figure does include grey-import EVs, with the 18 units of Honda e seen in the full breakdown below being the most noteworthy example in illustrating this point. Moreover, registration data for the Kia e-Niro, Hyundai IONIQ 6 and Kona Electric, Neta V, Volvo XC40, Mini Electric and MG EVs are unfortunately not available at present.

Going from the list above, it would seem that BMW currently leads the charge (ba dum tsst) with regards to EV proliferation over here. It remains to be seen though as to how long that lead will last, especially with Tesla and BYD only having recently begun pushing hard on their deliveries.
There is nevertheless also the slightly more concerning thing though regarding these explosive rise in popularity of EVs among Malaysians, and that being the unfortunately slow expansion of its supporting infrastructure nationwide. Also, has anyone in power actually looked at whether our national grid can support this rapid surge in electrical demand?
